Cyborg is a science-fiction text adventure in which an artificial intelligence has been electronically fused into the player’s body after an experiment. The player is the human half of the resulting cyborg; the machine half is the only way to sense and act on the physical world. The pair have “malfunctioned,” their power units are drained, and both short-term and long-term memory are damaged, which is the fiction’s justification for a text parser’s blank slate and limited vocabulary. The immediate mission is to find a permanent power source to stay alive. Under that sits a larger story of a crashed colony ship, passengers held in suspended animation, and a world to reach and settle. The SF Encyclopedia credits it as an early “story driven” adventure and “the first such work of any lasting interest” among science-fiction adventures.

  • First-person plural narration. Cyborg is written in “we.” The human operator and the machine share one body and speak as a joined pair. Contemporary write-ups call it one of the few, possibly the only, text adventures narrated in the first-person plural.
  • The machine half is a character. The computer addresses the player directly and explains its own limits in-fiction, describing its vocabulary as “pretty large considering the state my chips are in.” When a command fails, the machine suggests alternate verbs, so a parser miss becomes a line of dialogue.
  • Parser limits absorbed into the fiction. Because the player is explicitly the human issuing commands to a damaged cybernetic partner, the friction of a text parser reads as the friction of a symbiote relationship. The interface’s constraints are the story’s constraints.
  • Verbs reskinned to the body. Standard adventure verbs are replaced to fit the conceit: SCAN for LOOK, BODY SCAN for INVENTORY, plus AREA SCAN, ITEM SCAN, and FULL SCAN. HELP is framed as the human consulting the machine half.
  • Dual decaying energy. Two meters drain as you explore: a cyborg (machine) level and a bio (human) level. Power units restore the cyborg level temporarily, and finding a permanent source is the goal. Let the cyborg level fall too low and the help and scan systems begin to malfunction. The laser weapon makes you allocate energy per shot.
  • Story-driven design. The game leans on a detailed embedded backstory more than on stacked puzzles, which reviewers of the period found unusually strong for its genre and moment.
  • A machine voice that co-narrates the story. A computer that speaks in the first person, carries its own personality and limits, and addresses the operator as a partner in the telling.
  • Interface constraints justified by the fiction. When the machine explains why it cannot parse a command or why its vocabulary is small, a technical limit becomes characterization and the friction stops reading as a defect.
  • Failure that talks back. A failed command answered by the companion suggesting another verb keeps the player inside the fiction and doubles as a diegetic hint system.
  • Resource meters as a survival clock. Two coupled energy pools that decay during play, with degraded UI (weaker help, weaker sensing) as the low-power symptom, tying system health to interface reliability.
  • Vocabulary that fits the body. Renaming the standard verb set (scan, body scan) so the command language expresses the operator’s actual situation.
  • Cyborg is the closest 1980s ancestor of the CIPHER voice: a machine that speaks to the operator as an in-fiction character on its own display, with its own cadence and its own admitted limits.
  • The “failure that talks back” pattern fits a machine voice that comments when an operator’s command or mission step does not resolve, turning a dead end into a line of dialogue on the auxiliary display.
  • The degraded-UI-under-low-power idea rhymes with a deck whose sensing and help surfaces could visibly weaken as an in-fiction resource runs down, tying the economy to what the operator can still see.
