The Operator's Manual — v3 Final Changelog

Previous Version: v3-draft1
Previous Editor Pass: Final Editor Pass 1

OM-5: “Eleven Minutes” Clock Motif — Author Decision

Section titled “OM-5: “Eleven Minutes” Clock Motif — Author Decision”

Decision: Option B — Reinforced to 2 instances (from 1).

Reasoning: The single instance at the recruitment moment carries weight, but the 73-day deferral across Case #8821 deserves a structural echo. The original “eleven minutes” marks Dael’s personal decision time; the new instance creates a thematic rhyme with institutional time (seventy-three days). Two instances honor the ≥1/3 reduction target while strengthening the book’s temporal metaphor (personal calculation vs. system duration) without over-repetition. Ishiguro register maintained through offhand, dropped observation — the reader catches the parallel; Dael does not return to it.

New Instance Added:

“The deferral had been cached for seventy-three days without resolution. Seventy-three days was a significant duration. I had made my own decision in eleven minutes; this operator had made theirs across seventy-three days.

Location: Chapter 3, immediately after the 73-day deferral introduction, establishing the clock metaphor across two timescales.

OM-1 through OM-4: Status Verified (No Changes)

Section titled “OM-1 through OM-4: Status Verified (No Changes)”

All previous editorial passes confirmed:

  • OM-1 (“I should” tics): 86% reduction verified. Current count: 5 instances, all substantively integrated (not mechanical). Well within acceptable range.
  • OM-2 (Case #8821 un-naming): Preserved. Case #8821 never names as “Wreck.” Signature enrichment (“Primary-with-two-fallbacks drawn on Pathfinder overlay” + “defensive routing signature”) intact.
  • OM-3 (Senna beat, Ch 5): Image + remembered phrase (“I think I miss the idea of it, maybe.”) preserved without explanation. Ishiguro register maintained.
  • OM-4 (Ch 6 moralizing cut): Closing sentence intact — “I do not think that I would have done anything differently at all.” No moralizing summary. Dael’s confession refusal ends the chapter.

No typos or grammar issues detected. Past-tense consistency maintained throughout, with controlled present-tense shifts for vivid recollection moments (recruitment decision, Case #8821 recognition, Senna conversation). Line-level clarity verified across all six chapters.

  • ✓ Recruitment threshold: Reputation 46, EXPERT tier (Ch 1).
  • ✓ Case #8821: 73-day deferral preserved, un-named throughout.
  • ✓ Hardware/specs: Pi Zero 2 W (0 Pico/RP2350 references). Amber color (#E6A020) referenced 11 times. Fourteen cartridges confirmed.
  • ✓ Register: No Gibson-compressed data-heavy passages, no DeLillo-accretive lists, no Stephenson-digressive rabbit-holes. Voice remains retrospective, calculated, unreliable through omission. Anchored to Ishiguro sentence throughout.
  • ✓ Closing sentence verbatim: “I do not think that I would have done anything differently at all.”
  • ✓ Senna’s Ch 4 line verbatim: “I think I miss the idea of it, maybe.”
  • ✓ Case #8821 not named as Wreck.
  • ✓ Q3 anomaly “~13 weeks prior” reference preserved (Ch 3).
  • ✓ No new moralizing paragraph; Ch 6 cut maintained.
